firstly let me say that it was a brilliant idea to watch a film during mid term week.
i enjoyed the film and thought that it brought up valid points. let me say that i do not need to be sold on the idea of reducing pollution of any kind. one needs only to visit los angeles to be convinced. i am happy to think that because of this film people will bring more consciousness to the matter of sustainability. this is something we all should be working for. in a world where rocket fuel has been found in mothers milk, it is high time for all to be more conscious. that being said, i would be remiss not to mention my distrust of most politicians along the lines of gore. one needs only do a google search on gore's london based company "generation investment management" to understand that he is rolling in green (and i mean money) from the global warming issue. his company is an investment management company representing multi-national companies like: general electric, sysco, and what the company terms "high net worth individuals", not exactly your carbon neutral bunch. here is an excerpt from an article found at;
http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2007/03/al_gores_inconv.html
Former Vice President Al Gore has built a Green money-making machine capable of eventually generating billions of dollars for investors, including himself, but he set it up so that the average Joe can't afford to play on Gore's terms. And the US portion is headed up by a former Gore staffer and fund raiser who previously ran afoul of both the FEC and the DOJ, before Janet Reno jumped in and shut down an investigation during the Clinton years.
As Bill Hobbs first pointed out, Gore supposedly pays for his extra-large carbon footprint through Generation Investment Management (GIM) - and if you're looking to go green, and have your wallet go along with Gore, think again - average people are too insignificant to play - verifiable from this pdf.
Generation is based in London, with its U.S. offices in Washington, DC. The firm will manage the assets of institutional investors such as pension funds, foundations and endowments, as well as those of select high net worth individuals.* Generation expects to make extensive use of long-term performance based fees. Generation will begin its investment management business in early 2005.
* like Al Gore
Gore's company, GIM was specifically established to take financial advantage of new technologies and solutions related to combating Global Warming. The Global Warming crowd has told us that just recently new science emerged confirming the alleged fact that Global Warming is man made. So, ask yourself, why is it that Gore set up his Green money machine three years ago back in 2004? Is it possible Gore knew what the science would say before it was out? And even if not, can an individual who stands to make millions from Global Warming really be trusted as an honest broker on that topic? Talk about giving the fox the keys to the hen penthouse.

It does not matter who makes money from this issue. Unless the bills are used to make good boats, it just doesn't matter. Plus the science has been out for years. I feel you are being too skeptical of him. He is loaded without this green money. I think we have to do all be can to let the truth about our environment (as it does not take credit cards) be told. And if it is a rich person that will get richer, so be it. I don't care if I make money, I just want my future to stay green.
thanks for your comment michelle.
as i stated on my blog: i need not be sold on the idea of sustainability and pollution in any form must be delt with -- we all want the future to stay green. even those among the most blatant polluters would not want to die of lung cancer. but it does matter who is profiting from this issue -- not by the amounts they may make but by their credibility to be honest brokers on the topic. would merck pharmaceuticals be the most credible source to comment on the benefits of acupuncture? they have a lot of money to loose if acupuncture is effective. you see money does play into it. you say you want the truth to be told -- so do i. but the science is not as straight forward as you say. how do you account for the corresponding increase in temperature on the other planets in our solar system? is this from burning fossil fuel on earth? i am not able to critique the science, but there is evidence to the contrary from credible scientists. check into the opinions of geologists. do a google search. or here is a link: http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn06092007.html.
some of my skepticism is fueled by the companies and people pushing the global warming idea: for instance oil/energy companies. why would energy companies like GE push this idea? makes one wonder. nm rothschild inc has gigantic oil holdings all over the world, but a member of the family has written a book adamantly pushing the gore idea with ideas on instituting taxes for carbon use. doesn’t exactly add up.
Investing is not a bad thing. People do it all the time. Why not invest in greener ideas. Al Gore is not claiming to be a scientist, he is using his popularity to try to pass on the information. We don't have to trust all politicians, but if we always find the faults it is going to be too late. There are some people trying to make a difference.
true, some people are trying to make a difference, but im not sure which have an ulterior agenda in this case. and i in no way suggested that investing is a bad thing -- especially since i make a living doing that. but do you really believe polluters like oil companies are suddenly growing a conscience and promoting the idea of taxing themselves with no ulterior motive? e.g., the carbon tax that gore is pushing. you say why not invest in greener ideas -- that is precisely what i am trying to find out -- whether this is a green idea or a just another corporate revenue stream. be just the slightest bit skeptical before you are convinced. remember that as little as 20 years ago the pharmaceutical industry was perceived predominantly as humanitarian, nobly trying to rid the world of disease.
Do more research on global warming. Step outside and study the trends in our own exosystems weather patterns. I will no way be skeptical about global warming! There is no time. The science is all there, and if you don't like gore, there are hundreds of other places to learn about it.
